does it seem to anyone that there is a difference in quality of care between the midwives
who visit homes and those who expect you to come in for visits? i was wondering if those
who had been in the business longer stopped doing home visits when their practices got
more busy -- or if it was just a philosophilcal difference. i'd certainly rather someone
come here than me shlep out, but i don't want to sacrifice quality of care for a home visit.
any thoughts?

Fri, June 13, 2008 - 7:06 PMthe midwife i am working with is the same- i go to her until the last few visits. she did say, though, that she would come to my house for all of the visits if i needed her to (i guess if i had 3 other kids or something and i didnt want to schlep them all to the office)

Re: home visiting midwives versus non home visitors
Fri, June 13, 2008 - 11:57 PMThis is my first midwife and first homebirth, so I guess I don't have anything to compare it to. However, like another poster, I'm going to see mine until close to the end. Then she'll come to see me at my house a few weeks before the birth and for two weeks after the birth. -

Sat, June 14, 2008 - 10:06 AMHuh. My midwives had me go to them until the birth itself. They came to me for the postpartum visits only. -

Re: home visiting midwives versus non home visitors
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 12:47 PMIt seems like it would be a good idea for the midwife to come to your house at least *once* before the birth... how else will she find your house when you're in labor? -

Re: home visiting midwives versus non home visitors
Sat, June 14, 2008 - 3:41 PMAh- yup, they did. I'd just forgotten. They came for a pre-birth home visit so they'd have the lay of the land, and see the space we'd be laboring in and where to set the tub up, etc.
I'd been thinking more of the "mama check-up" aspect. -

Re: home visiting midwives versus non home visitors
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 2:46 PMI went to mine except for the last week or 2 and she came to me. And she came to me for PP visits until the 6 week visit. Then I went to her.

Re: home visiting midwives versus non home visitors
Mon, June 16, 2008 - 9:37 PMOur mid-wife came over to our house for the most- part. On occasion I stopped by her in- town office space (which was really a room she rented in another mid-wifes house) just cause it was easier.
I'm not sure if in-home or in-office visits matters more than how much respect you feel from them, and also how comfortable you feel around your mid-wife. Being able to ReALLY relax while you're in labor can keep everything going smooth &fast ;0)
