I'm expecting my second baby mid-late August... this will be my first home birth and I'm getting excited and all those jittery feelings about what will/might happen... is there anyone who has had their first birth within a medical facility and then second round gone home for the gold? what did you find easier, or wish you had had available...? I'm looking for tips and ideas of what helped all you loving mamas bring your babies into their own homes right out of their first home...
My midwife is amazing, and a great resource of info having been in this field for over 30 years... but I wanted to hear some other mama's perspectives...
Thanks!! :D

Re: any suggestions?
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 2:49 PMMy first birth was in a hospital, and my second and third were at home. There was no comparison. There is nothing that I would change about my home births; the difference was night and day. All I can say is make sure that you do your grocery shopping and make sure you have everything well stocked before your baby comes. It's a pain to go out to the market and it's way easier to be able to just go the the cupboard.

Re: any suggestions?
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 6:28 AMoh I've seen the documentary and loved it...
my first birth was with my same midwife, totally natural, no drugs...
was really smooth too! 5 hours of active dilating and 14 minutes of pushing!
The only reason we went to the hospital was because we lived too far from each other (at the time) to do a home birth...
I'll have to look into the books you all mentioned... so far my midwife has been a great resource of information...
She attended my birth for my mother... she is AWESOME!
the stocked fridge is a great reminder.... these are the things I'm wondering about...!!
I'll have some family with me I'm sure... and possibly my 6 yr old son...
ahh yes, has anyone had their children stay with them (even just within the house) during a home birth?
I'm still a bit up in the air about it...
Thanks so far for all the great suggestions! -

Re: any suggestions?
Wed, June 18, 2008 - 9:26 AMYes! My daughter was four when her brother was born.
We had my mom come and be her Birth Buddy so she could always have an adult giving her 100% attention so she could come and go as she pleased. We played it by ear for the birth itself- it was 6:00 am when he was born, and they'd gone upstairs for some quiet by then. She came down as soon as we sent the assistant up to tell them he was born, so she got to see him still squinty and slippery and "fresh." :) Someone took some photos of her holding him soon afterward. Those photos are the most precious belongings we own <3
I was home when both my brothers were born. I was 3 for the first one, and it really bummed me out that nobody woke me up to see him come out. I felt very left out. I have a very clear memory of waking up in the morning and being told he'd been born in the night. I was pissed!
I was 6 for the second, and got to sit right with the midwife and watch him come out. It was the most amazing, wonderful thing I'd ever seen. Nothing could do more to make a girl trust that birth is safe and natural- and grow up with less fear than most of going through it herself.
The main thing is talking with your son about everything, and making sure he feels that he gets to decide how involved he wants to be at the time.
We loved reading Welcome With Love by Jenni Overend.

I didn't realize it was out of print! Ouch $$... try inter-library loan :) -

Wed, June 18, 2008 - 8:53 PMre Welcome with Love: yes a really nice book for older sibs if babies about to be born at home
my favorite on-line sources for out of print or used books www.abebookscom and www alibris.com I've replenished my library with may classic 1970s "how to"s (including my original homebirth classics collection) that I couldn;t find even in NBerkeley's great used bookstores Amazon.com also does used book searches but hey I like to support the independents and that's what abebooks and alibris are. prices very reasonable considering many of these books rare
fixit,it;s so cool you were born into a homebirthing household and can talk about what it was like
