how much can i expect to bleed

i am confused about how much blood to expect in the minutes, hours, days after the birth. how does one know how much is too much? what herbs have others used to slow bleeding when necessary?

I believe if you fill a pad in an hour you are bleeding too much.. this is a day or so after birth. The bleeding should slow in 4 days and if you are staying in bed during your "babymoon" you can expect to stop bleeding in 2 weeks. Some go for 6 weeks or more. I bled for 3 months.. on and off and not a whole lot... I'm a bleeder though; which is not typical.

You can drink Raspberry Leaf tea. This helped me stop (I wasn't drinking it right after delivering my son). I know there are other good herbs but can't think of them right now.

i didn't bleed too much, but you must remember that every pregnancy, birth, baby & woman are different. there is nothing to "expect". for example, i had a couple weeks of lochia (fun stuff), other moms nearly bleed to death. hopefully you won't be the latter!

i guess i'm still not quite getting it. i've never in my life filled a pad in an hour. to me that sounds very scary.

i don't get how i could bleed for weeks or months either. that doesn't sound safe.

    confused mama to be.

It wont seem that weird when its happening, and will probably go on for a day or two. It might go on longer as spotting. You have to remember to keep your iron intake high (kale, sesame seeds, almonds, apricots, molasses) and drink lots of water.

      You'll be fine.

ditto on the- you will be fine. your body creates extra blood during pregnancy to help oxygenate baby and to help you tolerate a blood loss. nature has a wonderful design to keep everyone healthy through the process.
